Les misérables Tome V Jean Valjean French Edition eBook Victor Hugo

What else can be said about one of the world's masterpieces of literature? The monumental work by Victor Hugo follows the lives of Jean Valjean (arguably the central character of the story) and others, in a way that very much incorporates the reader into the action. This can become quite uncomfortable at times, as the experiences of the characters involve a good deal of physical and emotional hardship, sometimes very graphic. At the same time Victor Hugo provides the reader a magnificent glimpse of Paris in the early 19th century, and of French history, including one of the most compelling descriptions of the Battle of Waterloo, which resulted in the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte.
The book is not difficult to read provided the reader has a fair command of the French language. There are many XIX century terms, including argot which are difficult (or impossible) to translate. This does not detract from the enjoyment of the work, and in facts adds spice to the narrative, which is squarely placed among the common people of that era.

I am enjoying the App.
Such a beautifully sad story that is brought to life by Victor Hugo's poetic narrative, with a sort of romantic mystique that is usually only found in French literature. Jean Valjean wins the heart of the reader without them even realizing it. The plot is a true masterpiece of how different characters eventually connect to tell a story about life, love, duty, and destiny (without leaving out the evils that afflict humankind).
An interesting story with well written descriptions of the players. Extremely detailed descriptions of environment and its historical events.I often heard that the play was rather depressing. I did not think the ending was depressing after having read the book.
A classic. Very worthwhile reading.
Victor Hugo was a genius, and that's probably his masterpiece. It may be a little long and he wanders off a lot in is his writing style, but it's worth it! Read it in the original in french if you can, it's a nice experience.

Note that this version doesn't include the whole book, it's just the last of 5 books.
Oh who doesn't know the wonderful story of Les Mis? But still, I have to say first, that if your French is not great, this book is still not that hard to read. When I started (volume 1), I was concerned that even with a high level of proficiency, I'd struggled with the old fashioned language. Nope, not that bad. Also I thought it might be like Moby Dick, something everyone says you should read but it's a real slog. Nope to that too.

It is quite sentimental, but the story is beautiful and once I finished reading I felt such an aching sadness. If you like French novels you should definitely make room for this at some time in your life.
Introducing one of the most famous characters in literature, Jean Valjean - the noble peasant imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread - Les Misérables (1862) ranks among the greatest novels of all time. In it Victor Hugo takes readers deep into the Parisian underworld, immerses them in a battle between good and evil, and carries them onto the barricades during the uprising of 1832 with a breathtaking realism that is unsurpassed in modern prose.

Within his dramatic story are themes that capture the intellect and the emotions crime and punishment, the relentless persecution of Valjean by Inspector Javert, the desperation of the prostitute Fantine, the amorality of the rogue Thénardier and the universal desire to escape the prisons of our own minds. Les Misérables gave Victor Hugo a canvas upon which he portrayed his criticism of the French political and judicial systems, but the portrait which resulted is larger than life, epic in scope - an extravagant spectacle that dazzles the senses even as it touches the heart.
